The Upper Reaches of the Yangtze is a land of remote mountains, gorges and minority peoples, which stretches over half the Yangtze’s 6,300 km (3,900 mile) length, from its source to the first major city. Famous attraction here is Tiger Leaping Gorge, near the ancient town of Lijiang in Yunnan Province.

It starts from the Tanggula Mountains, the Source of the Yangtze, which is located in the Tanggula Mountains on the border of Qinghai Province and Tibet Autonomous Region, then flows east through Yushu Prefecture to south forming the border between Tibet and Sichuan Province and continue to Yibin City to enter Jinsha River in the middle reaches.

You can see the First Bend of the Yangtze River—Shigu (Stone Drum) Town, Tiger Leaping Gorge and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the upper reaches of the Yangtze.

What Make the Upstream and Downstream Cruises of the Yangtze River Different?

Taking a Yangtze Cruise is nearly one must-do thing during the trip in China for almost all of the foreigners nowadays. It is true that the prices of both streams are the same for most cruise routes except that of between Chongqing and Shanghai, where the price of the upstream is more expensive. However, few travelers know about their differences—Yeah, that’s right, downstream cruises are normally shorter than upstream cruise and shore excursions may also vary according to different schedules.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Downstream Cruise

Advantages of the Downstream Cruise include shorter cruises, no motion at night and cheaper price for cruises between Chongqing and Shanghai.

Yangtze River

Cruising downstream is faster than travelling upstream: about 29 kph (18 mph) compared to an average of 16 kph (10 mph), which make the cruises shorter and suitable for people whose traveling time is limited. Cruises from Chongqing to Yichang (downstream) take four days, while from Yichang to Chongqing five days; and cruises from Chongqing to Shanghai (downstream) take seven days, while from Shanghai to Chongqing nine days. Besides, downstream ships dock and never travel at night. People who are very sensitive to motion sickness or are light sleepers can have a good night’s sleep as there is no rocking motion during nights, and you will not miss any charming scenery during the hours of darkness because all the scenery is passed during the day. Moreover, downstream is cheaper between Chongqing and Shanghai though most prices of cruise routes are the same in both upstream and downstream.

Disadvantages however, shore excursions for cruises between Chongqing and Yichang are the same in number while most cruisers run between Chongqing and Yichang.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Upstream Cruise

Advantages will be a slower cruise and a longer cruise. You will have more time to enjoy the charming scenery, listen to the explanation of the attractions, ask questions about the attractions and take photos at the upstream cruise as the average speed is 16 kph (10 mph) compared to 29 kph (18 mph) for downstream cruises. Besides, there is time available for you to explore the Chinese culture, history and customs through the greater number of shows and longer commentaries as it is a longer cruise compared to the downstream cruise.

Gezhou Dam

Gezhou Dam

Travelling at night and the more expensive price for cruises between Chongqing and Shanghai will be its disadvantages. Cruise ships travelling upstream have to travel at night in order to reach shore excursion destinations and scenic attractions in daylight hours because of the slower speed, which will affect your sleeping and inevitably you will miss some scenery at night. Besides, it is more expensive for cruises between Chongqing and Shanghai though the prices of upstream and downstream cruises are the same for most cruise routes.

Many Chinese people tend to choose downstream as it means “plain sailing”, however, both upstream and downstream have their advantages and disadvantages and how to choice just depends on your travel schedule and what is important to you.

Kuimen : When stepping into the canyon of the Qutang Gorge, you can see two bluffs on both sides are cliffy, with the distance less than 100 meters. Located at the western end of Qutang Gorge, these two steep bluffs are 1300 meters high standing upon either side of the Yangtze River. The shape of the the bluffs look like a slightly open gate, therefore comes the name of “Kui Men”, which is one of the highlight scenery of the Yangtze River, and this is the reason why Qutang Gorge is also called Kui Gorge. The powerful and great Yangtze River will become a small belt when it is passing and winding through Kuimen in Qutang Gorge as the width of the Yangtze River in that area is only about 100 to 200 meters and you can’t imagine the narrowest point here—yes, it is only about 50 meters! There are five words on the bluff : “夔门天下雄 ( Kui Men Tian Xia Xiong) ”, and the solitary and lofty peaks: Mt. Baiyan (White Salt Mountain) in the north and Mt. Chijia soar above the horizon.

Rhinoceros Viewing the Moon: You’ll easily see a big stone at top of a mountain on the north bank of Qutang Gorge, which looks like a rhinoceros and it is facing Kui gate to the west.  You can see that the stone looks like a rhinocero that is viewing the moon when the moon is in the west at night. When will Congress finally battle these lobbyist so we aren’t paying 6 dollars a gallon next year???

Question by D&ECouture: When will Congress finally battle these lobbyist so we aren’t paying 6 dollars a gallon next year???
I know everyone (well I’ll say 90 percent) of America is getting affected by the gas prices and even though ya it’s not extremely horrible it still isn’t great… I can’t remember the last time I was paying 300 dollars a month is just gas for my cars alone and basically all we do is go to work, school (kids), and any daily needs that need to be met..

I understand the whole supply and demand concept as well as China and India demanding oil like never before so of course prices will rise but my questions is when will our Congress Men and Women grow a pair and fight these damn lobbyist and environmentalist and drill for resources that are readily there and can help reduce these prices

That or some new alternative technology needs to be made ASAP, you mean to tell me we have fighter jets that look like the size of birds on radar, are cable of cruising at super sonic and we can go into space but we can’t figure something else to run on but gasoline??? whatever

Question by Penelope: My grandparents by to go on a trip with me and my sister?
I’m 15, my sisters 12, our father just passed away and his parents (my grandparents) want to treat us to a trip to just get away and have fun and my grandparents are also getting older so they figure they should go on a trip with us now before they don’t remember who I am.. They want to go somewhere they haven’t been before, so no Ecuador, china, virgin islands, australia, hawaii, or most of Europe. I was thinking Mexico, Alaska, Galapagos, Brazil 2016 Olympics (it’s in a few years but my grandparents are still pretty healthy. They can both walk around all day without a cane or walker.) my grandpa and I like cruises and sailboats, I like swimming in pools and oceans, and my grandma likes shopping and taking pictures. I speak fluent Spanish, my mother and grandma know a little Spanish and German, and we all have passports and really as large a budget as necessary. We don’t want to cut any corners on this trip.
