Question by dhudson29: What to do in Shanghai?
A group of us are traveling to China in October. We will be there for 2 weeks traveling in Beijing, Xi’an, different ports on the Yangtze River and finally in Shanghai.
Our trip is already scheduled for us for everyday except for the final day in Shanghai which is free for us to do things on our own.
Any suggestions?
Thank you for all of your suggestions. This has been very helpful. I bought a travel book about China so that I can have a better understanding of her history and culture. Also, the Travel channel has had a week long “China Week” which has been very insiteful. I am very excited about visiting. Only 2 more months to go!

Visiting the Yangtze from Shanghai.

I have just booked flights to China for a (short) 10day visit. I am flying into Beijing and spending three nights there before heading to Shanghai. I am travelling with a friend who really wants to visit the Yangtze. What is the easiest, quickest and cheapest way of visiting the Yangtze from Shanghai? I looked at flights to Chongqing from Beijing/Shanghai but they are so expensive, do any cruises leave from Shanghai along the Yangtze? Are there any nice areas of the Yangtze easily accessible from Shanghai?

Hi there,
There are Bullet trains from Hongqiao Railway Station to North Chongqing that cost 473RMB one way for a second class seats. The journey takes about 18 hrs ( not too sure ). The normal train will take roughly 36 hrs. There are also Cruises to the Yangtze from Shanghai but most of the itinerary were be 6-8days. And its also very costly. Have provided some sites for you.

I’m pretty sure China doesn’t have states and that Beijing and Shanghai are cities. I have been to both cities. Shanghai was very hot when I went, but there were lots of nature things to see while you’re driving on the road. The food is okay, but personally I enjoy eating food in Beijing more. Honestly, Beijing was the best for me because there are so many things to do, shop, eat, and go sightseeing. There are a lot of interesting buildings and you can see the Bird’s Nest! Beijing is a lot of fun.

Please don’t tell me it’s central. I mean if I have to categorize it as either north of south. I have been told the dividing line is the Yangtze River but it seems to run thru Shanghai and so I’m not sure.

It is on the Eastern edge of china… Not on North nor South 🙂

This cruise centre is the port of cruise ships that cruises around the world like the star cruises, crystal cruises, venus and asuka2 cruise ship. I would like also to know how far is it from the International Airport? Would it cost me too much if I take a taxi cab to reach the cruise centre? How about the cruise Centre of Dalian, China? What part of China is Dalian? I haven’t heard of it.

Given the fact that Japan has just been devastated by the earthquake, the tsunami and the three explosions and meltdown of three nuclear plants, I stay completely away from that particular cruise for at least a couple of years.
